I Just Gave Away A Bunch Of Ghost Hunting Gear … And Here’s Why I Did It
This past weekend, I had the Ghostly Activities Club over for a little get-together. During the shindig, I gave away gear I didn’t use anymore. It’s not because it got old or it didn’t work. It’s because I’m changing how I approach ghost hunting. Get the scoop after the jump.
The Great Ghost Hunting Gadget Purge
Ok, I don’t know if ‘great’ is the right term, but I did clear out 2 tubs of ghostly gadgets. Some of it surprising; some of it, not so much.
For the most part, if it didn’t give an accurate and detailed measurement, then it went into to the giveaway. That means gadgets like K2s and Dead Bells. They simply don’t have reliable measurement.
On second thought, I did give away a Mel Meter, and that has a detailed measurement.
Anyway, a lot of the gadgets simply didn’t work with my phone. I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max, and quite a few of the gadgets didn’t work with a USB-C cable. On a side note, I love filming on my phone. Talk about being nimble on a ghost hunt, eh?
So … let’s look at gear that now lives with club members.
What Gear Was Taken
Many people are shocked that I gave away 2 of my camcorders. If you know me, I can’t go anywhere without one.
The Sony 4K and Panasonic were sent off mainly because I didn’t use them. I tend to film with Canon camcorders because they autofocus quickly and handle low-light environments better. Plus, they use infrared. I do have a Lumix that I may or may not keep. It takes loves pictures, tho. The Panasonic will now be used at a theater school for kids.
I dumped all the EMF meters that didn’t have digital displays. Goodbye K2s, 1 Spirit Candle and Dead Bells!
I also handed off the SLS Kinect. That’s because it’s so prone to false positives … and I have an SLS mini. Much easier to transport.
Then there were other things like static electricity meters, shadow meters, UMD meters, and more stuff like that. They give pretty blinking lights but not much more.
In all, over 20 pieces of gear found new homes.
What I Kept
For the most part, I kept the gear that fit with my approach to ghost hunting, which is to measure ghostly interactions, environmental readings and movement. So, I kept things like an EDI+, Tracerwire, Onvoy, Flux2, Poltertune and gear like that. I also kept the BooBuddy Interactive.
But I was still a hypocrite. I kept my Ovilus, REM pod, portal, and 1 Spirit Candle. Gear that’s not exactly known for its accuracy.
Of course, I stil have all the Canon camcorders, broadcast mics, and a ton of audio recorders.
If I had my way, I’d just bring a camcorder with killer mic, an H4n, Mel Meter and a Polternune (or Flux2), and sit in the dark, asking a bunch of questions.
At least, I don’t have to bring 3 extra cases of gear with me. Just me and the cameras going to a haunt and filming it.
Anything New On The Way?
So … I’ll tell you a little secret. Just between you, me and everyone else that comes to the page … I’m a gadget whore. I’ve got my sights on the BooBuddy 2, Solus Graphing Logger, Tracer 2 Light Wire, and a new GS2 laser grid.
Nothing will stop me from getting the Boo 2.
Conclusion
Anyway, that was the giveaway. It feels good to clear out those dusty gadgets and make room for a few new things. I also found a killer mic I’ve been meaning to use for live listening on my next ghost hunt. It’s a Rode NTG-5. I only used it once like 3 years ago. This puppy is going right into the ghost hunting gadget arsenal.
Do you have favorite gear? Tell me all about it in the comments. Thanks for reading Ghostly Activities. Much appreciated and take care!
