Getting Spooky At The Old Courthouse Inn
Jake and Merle (The Paranormal Roadtrippers) went to Powell River, BC, Canada for a haunted event at The Old Courthouse Inn. Of course, haunted hijinks ensued, and here are the spooky highlights. Get the scoop after the jump.
Haunted Weekend Events
The weekend of March 21st, Kelly Belanger opened the doors of the Inn for a haunted weekend retreat. Merle and I went up as the co-hosts of the event with The Unknown Paranormal (Mike, Christie and Phil) to show the guests the haunted places and let them ghost hunt.
We met some great new friends to boot (Arlene, Crystal, Dee, Jen, Ashlie, René, and Dark) along with old friends (Kendra, Caroline, Kelly, and Kelsey).
Just a side note: Breakfast was included and you must have the pancakes. They are so good, and they remind me of my Grandma Jones’ recipe. Get them with blueberries. Yum.
Jake’s Night in Room 7
I won’t spoil the spookiness during my stay in Room 7. You can watch it at the end of this video above. Let’s just say, I reconnected with the spirit from our very first documentary at the Inn.
The Haunted Piano

On Saturday afternoon, Kelly acquired a new haunted object, a piano, for his collection of those pianos-with-music-spinning-thing-that-plays-music-on-its-own.
And there’s a story that goes like this:
An elderly man recently died in the house with his beloved piano. He would play it for his (now departed) wife, and it had been in his family since the 1860s. A few weeks ago, he passed away at the piano. It doesn’t work anymore, but the man would still try to play it for his wife.
The new owners wanted it out of the house right away. They didn’t say the man haunted the piano, but they wasted no time in removing it. With the help of me, Kelly, Inn staff, Merle, and The Unknown Paranormal boys (Mike and Phil), we pushed it out the backdoor, onto a dolly, to a pickup truck, and finally in the basement of the Inn.
We tried to see if there was activity, but nothing happened on that first night. I’ll keep you update should the piano show haunted object activity.
What The Hell Happened In The Basement

This time around, the basement seemed to be the hotspot (along with Room 7). Investigator-guests had encounters with a spirit named Jay in the workshop. From what we could tell, he was 23 years-old when he died. He also seemed to have a learning disability, or he didn’t receive an education. Jay mentioned he couldn’t read. The evidence indicated he did heavy manual labor in life.
We’re not sure if he worked at the local paper mill. We don’t believe he was a workhand on a farm because this part of British Columbia doesn’t have much for any farming history. It is known for logging.
We also learned that his was raised by his aunt. He never knew his father, and his mother died when he was young. There may have been 2 other siblings as well.
As for his death, we think he was murdered. During the manifestation, a sensitive experienced sharp stabbing pains in her stomach. We’ll do some research to see if we can identify him. However, Jay didn’t provide a year of death. But in a small town, a murder would make headlines. We’ll check the archives for more.
That was our spooky adventure that weekend. I’ll follow up with the Vancouver tour in a different post. Merle took me around his hometown the night before we left for Powell River. Stay tuned for it.
The next haunted weekend retreat at The Old Courthouse Inn comes in October 2025, and you can ask Kelly (the owner) about it now. If you do come to the Inn, read the journals in each room. They’re filled with true ghostly encounters.
