Ghost Dream Meaning, Interpretation & Causes

Many people have dreams with supernatural elements to them. Ghosts are a common one. But it doesn’t mean what you think. Get more on ghosts in dreams after the jump.

Ghost Dream Meaning

A ghost found in your dreams isn’t a real ghost. It’s part of your subconscious. It means you  have a longstanding issue you must deal with.

Jacob Rice of Ghostly Activities, May 2014

While ghosts in dreams can have a few different meanings, it deals with personal and emotional situations. You see, negative emotions lead to scary dreams. That’s the case 99% of the time, but you could still have a ghostly visitation. It’s pretty rare, though. Psychics or mediums are far more likely to have that kind of experience. For us regular joes, it’s likely emotions that trigger a ghost dream.

These emotions include:

  • anger
  • hatred
  • anxiety
  • grief
  • regret
  • mistrust
  • insecurity

Anxiety tends to cause ghosts in dreams more often than the others. It’s the worry of the unknown that is a catalyst. I get asked about ghost dreams by many people about to have a major life event.

Those events are:

  • leaving home for college
  • getting married
  • the death of a parent
  • having a baby
  • buying a home

The ghost itself represents your brain trying to solve the problem: It’s you. To tell what the problem is, look at the ghost’s actions. Is it chasing you? That’s fear. Is it breaking down a door? You feel forced to make a decision. Does it chase you out of your house? You don’t feel safe or secure. Does the ghost take food away? You have financial woes.

Your brain is a magnificent and magical part of you, and it finds creative ways to help you solve problems. Even if they’re a little scary.

Dreaming of ghosts is just one way to solve them. Once you figure it out AND solve the situation, the ghost will leave your dreams.

Hello! Not sure why a ghost or spirit seen in a dream can’t be real, has to be a symbol of an unresolved issue. I believe that there is an after life but also sometimes have doubts, as we all do. One night as I prayed, I told my deceased father that I hoped that he as in heaven, that he still existed, and that we would meet again some day. In a dream, my dad walked up to me out of darkness. I put both hands on his shoulders and I physically FELT him in a way that was 1,000 times more real than if I did this to someone in real life. I told him, “You DO still exist!” and he smiled and faded away. If there is a possibility that an after life is real or not real, why would my brain “create” this scenario and validate only one option? I know in my heart that this was real, not because I “want” it to be, but because it was.

I likewise had an experience in a dream right after my father died. In the dream, I was sitting with my mom and sister at mom’s kitchen table when we heard the sound of dad’s truck pulling into the yard. We looked at each other in disbelief, and as we did so, my father walked in, said hello and smiled as usual, and I told him – dad, you can’t be here, your’e dead! He looked at me with a sad expression and faded away. Again, I believe this to be real, not sure why you think that spirits appearing in dreams are us, “working issues and problems out”. Dreams have been an important part of contact with the spirit world since Day One.

Hi Nicholas, thanks for writing. I’m writing broadly to a ghost dream meaning. Dreams can be channel for ghostly communication, but for 99% of people, it’s just their mind.
